For some time now I have ben wanting to write up in this blog everyday but hey things happen and I just never got around to it. Well now is the time to do so. I want to start dsicussing how we work and how we need to change the way we work. So let me begin and please feel free to jump in and respond.
I was recently having a conversation about Leadership. What does Leadership mean? We debated back and forth. Is someone who has taken people or their country or company to horendous ends a leader? If someone is followed for evil or wrong doing, does this make them a leader? There are many definitions of leadership and one could go to that place if you wanted to get the exact meaning. But what is exactness anyway - someone else's meaning of the word.
So here goes - my definition of Leadership. Leadership is when a person practices self observation and introspection. They define their purpose and they understand their values and vision. They understand that the purpose is greater than themselves and that it must benefit the greater good of others. They connect with others who have a similar vision and they outline their great story - the vision. Gradually more people join them to achieve this vision as they align with them. The leader works with each person to support them in reaching their potential in relation to the vision. Great things are achieved, the vision becomes real, the purpose begins to be achieved. And then the process keeps occuring over and over again, introspection, purpose, vision, telling the story, gathering aligned people, serving them to achieve their potential and vision, and then the results.
The hardest part that I see in being a leader is to change from the old way of thinking - looking outward. True leaders look in so they can see out.
